The Mechanical Turk: Data Management & Privacy in the Age of AI

Part of the Discussion Series on Research Integrity & Ethics. In 1770, a chess-playing machine amazed Europe, with a chess master hidden inside all along. In 2005, Amazon revived the name for a platform where thousands of people labelled the data modern AI would learn from. The workers labelling its data are still there, and now so are you, every time your code, drafts or unpublished data go in. Whose data goes in, and who gets to decide?

The story from the Research Integrity Office, the science from Prof. Upinder S. Bhalla, the arguments from everyone. Open to PhD students, postdocs, and anyone who has ever hit "paste". Scenarios on screen; the room argues the calls.
